Klabat University has moved closer to establishing an undergraduate medical program after successfully completing a field evaluation by Indonesia’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, marking another step in the Adventist institution’s effort to expand education and health services in the country.
The Directorate of Institutions under the Directorate General of Higher Education conducted the evaluation as part of the university’s application to establish the new program. Evaluators accepted all major components of the proposal, requiring only minor administrative revisions before the process can advance toward the issuance of an operational permit.
The proposed program would expand Klabat University’s educational offerings into medical training and strengthen its contribution to Indonesia’s health sector. University leaders said the program is being developed to prepare physicians with professional competence and integrity, with particular expertise in the prevention and early detection of cervical cancer.
The development also represents a significant expansion of the university’s service-oriented educational mission. By preparing future health professionals, the university aims to connect Adventist education with the health needs of communities and contribute to a larger network of professionals equipped to provide preventive, compassionate and evidence-based care.
Evaluation Reviews University Readiness
During the field evaluation, the assessment team conducted a comprehensive review of the university’s readiness to provide medical education.
Evaluators examined governance, curriculum, human resources, facilities and infrastructure, laboratories, teaching hospital arrangements, quality assurance systems, financing and the implementation of Indonesia’s Tri Dharma of Higher Education, which encompasses education, research and community service.
The team also reviewed supporting documents and conducted on-site inspections of facilities that would support the proposed medical program.
According to the university, evaluators determined that the institution’s human resources, laboratories, educational facilities, quality assurance systems and institutional support met the requirements outlined in the proposal framework.
All key components received acceptance, with evaluators requesting minor revisions involving administrative documents and several technical adjustments.
The findings indicate that the substantive requirements reviewed during the field evaluation have been met, moving the university toward the final stages of the approval process.
Collaboration Supports Medical Education Initiative
Klabat University administrators credited the progress to collaboration among government agencies, medical education institutions, health organizations and university personnel.
The university expressed appreciation to Indonesia’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology and the Directorate of Institutional Affairs for their guidance throughout the application and evaluation process.
The university also acknowledged members of the field evaluation team, including representatives from the Directorate of Institutional Affairs, Higher Education Service Institution Region XVI, Indonesian Independent Accreditation Institute for Higher Education in Health, Indonesian Medical Council, Association of Indonesian Teaching Hospitals and Association of Indonesian Medical Education Institutions.
Academic representatives from Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia and Padjadjaran University also participated in the evaluation.
University leaders also recognized Pelita Harapan University, which serves as the supervising Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Medicine at Hasanuddin University, which has provided consultation during the development process.
Teaching hospital personnel, collaborating institutions, faculty members, educational staff, university administrators, task force members and supporting units also contributed to preparing the documents, laboratories, infrastructure and educational facilities required for the evaluation.
The university rector said the successful completion of the field evaluation reflected the cooperation, commitment and dedication of the institutions and individuals involved in preparing the proposed program.
Expanding Education for Service
Klabat University said it will immediately address the remaining minor revisions as it works toward completing the requirements for an operational permit.
Once approved, the undergraduate medical program would add another dimension to the university’s role as an Adventist educational institution by integrating professional medical preparation with a commitment to service.
The proposed emphasis on prevention and early detection of cervical cancer is intended to prepare graduates to respond to an important area of health care while strengthening preventive health services available to communities.
Through the initiative, Klabat University seeks to extend the impact of Adventist education beyond the classroom by preparing future physicians whose knowledge and skills can serve individuals, families and communities throughout Indonesia.
The university views the proposed medical program as part of its continuing commitment to develop professionals who combine competence, integrity and service as they respond to the country’s evolving health care needs.
