A group of 40 young musicians from Thailand's Asia-Pacific International University (AIU) Church, known as the Precious Hands Ensemble (PHE), turned their short holiday break into a mission opportunity, ministering through music in Hong Kong and Macau from December 13–17. Despite the financial challenges of visiting two regions, the ensemble demonstrated faith, meticulous planning, and unwavering dedication to share the love of Jesus through music.
The PHE, a self-supporting orchestra comprised of musicians aged nine to nineteen, performed at Adventist churches and schools, including Bayview Church, Hong Kong Adventist Academy (HKAA), Hong Kong Adventist International Church, Tai Po Sam Yuk Secondary School, and Macao Sam Yuk Middle School. The group's inspiring concerts showcased their spiritual mission and cultural heritage.
A Vision Takes Flight
The idea for the visit emerged in August during Dr. Frank Wai-ming Tam’s official visit to AIU, president of Hong Kong Adventist College (HKAC). The ensemble leaders shared their desire to minister within the Chinese Union Mission (CHUM). Dr. Tam provided initial logistical support, including discounted accommodation and meals at HKAC, which helped make the trip possible.
The performances reflected the ensemble's mission, rooted in the AIU Church’s Children’s Ministry. Formed in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, the group united young musicians under the leadership of Mallen Cortez and Kathleen Yonathan. Over the years, the ensemble has performed at church services, mission anniversaries, and charity concerts, spreading hope and inspiration across Thailand and beyond.
A Journey of Faith and Dedication
Funding the trip required extensive efforts. Starting in August, the ensemble engaged in fundraising activities, including food sales, T-shirt production, and a series of benefit concerts. Parents and community members also contributed by organizing creative initiatives such as selling gift bags. Their collective efforts raised approximately 130,000 baht ($3,830).
"Only God can drive the hearts of PHEs," remarked Kamolnan Taweeyanyaongkul, Vice President of Academic Affairs at AIU. "We helped each other, like compiling little rocks to build an altar to glorify God. Parents were supportive, and kids, though tired, enjoyed being part of the team.”
Inspiring Performances
The PHE captured audiences in Hong Kong and Macau with a series of spiritually uplifting concerts. At Bayview Church and Hong Kong Adventist International Church, their Thanksgiving musical concert featured beloved hymns such as The First Noel and We Have This Hope, along with instrumental performances and choir harmonies.
At schools like HKAA and Macao Sam Yuk Middle School, the ensemble blended sacred music with modern hits and traditional Thai dance, fostering a meaningful cultural exchange. “It was thrilling to see our students intrigued by the cultural and musical feast PHE blessed us with,” said Ola Hall, HKAA principal.
A Testament to Mission
The Precious Hands Ensemble’s journey reflects the transformative power of faith, unity, and music in ministry. By using their talents to glorify God, these young musicians demonstrated the potential of Adventist youth to inspire others and build bridges across cultures. Their mission reminds us that no challenge is too great when faith and purpose are at the forefront.
