Pastor Abraham Carpena, Former Health Director in the Southern Asia-Pacific Region, Dies at 73

      March 2, 2024

On February 28, 2024, Pastor Abraham Carpena, affectionately known as Pastor Abe, the former Health Director of the Southern Asia-Pacific Division, breathed his last surrounded by his loving children, Loreane, Lj Arne, and Lorjean Mae. Pastor Carpena was married to his late wife, Mrs. Perida Carpena, who sadly passed away in September 2012. Pastor Carpena’s passing marks the end of a remarkable life dedicated to serving the Adventist church and leaving an indelible mark on the health ministry of the church in the Southern Asia-Pacific region.

Pastor Carpena's journey in the Adventist ministry began in 1980, when he served as a teacher at the Negros Mission Academy. His commitment to the church led him to Bacolod and Cebu, where he continued to impart his wisdom as a Bible teacher. However, it was during his tenure at the Bacolod Sanitarium and Hospital from 1983 to 1988 that his passion for the health ministry was ignited.

His tireless efforts and dedication did not go unnoticed. Pastor Carpena rose through the ranks, becoming the Health and Temperance Director of the Central Philippine Union Conference (formerly the Central Philippine Union Mission) from 1989 to 1996. His leadership in this role paved the way for a broader impact, as he was later called to serve as the Health Director of the Southern Asia-Pacific Division from 1997 to 2015.

Throughout his tenure, Pastor Carpena left an enduring legacy of resilience, dedication, and passion for sharing the gospel through health ministries. His impact reached far and wide, touching the lives of countless individuals under his care.

Colleagues fondly remember Pastor Abe as a beacon of inspiration, always leading by example and fostering a sense of purpose within the health ministry. His influence extended beyond organizational boundaries, earning him respect and admiration not only in the Philippines but across the Southern Asia-Pacific region.

"I cherish the memories of Pastor Carpena as both a mentor and a dear friend. His role as a servant leader was exemplified by an encouraging demeanor that touched the lives of everyone who had the chance to cross paths with him. Personally, he played a pivotal role as a father figure in my life, and his influence will endure in my heart forever," expressed Dr. Lalaine Alfanoso, the present Health Ministries Director of the Southern Asia-Pacific Division.

"He embodied the spirit of Christ's compassionate healing in his actions. Pastor Carpena's commitment to praying for the sick, extending heartfelt visits to the hurting, and prioritizing meaningful relationships with those in need of attention and support was truly inspirational. His dedication extended beyond individuals, as he actively worked towards fostering valuable connections within the community, promoting health awareness, and contributing to community development," shared Marivic Buendia, a close colleague and friend from the division office.

The Adventist community mourns the loss of a true servant-leader. His contributions to the health ministry will be remembered as a testament to a life well-lived in the service of others. Pastor Abe's memory will continue to inspire current and future generations of Adventists to carry forward his legacy of dedication, passion, and resilience.
