The International Board of Education (IBE) of the Seventh-day Adventist Church conducted a formal evaluation for the proposed Adventist College Palawan on February 5, 2025. The assessment, led by Dr. Hudson Kibuuka, Associate Education Director of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, marks a critical step in the journey toward establishing a new institution dedicated to Christ-centered learning in the province.
The evaluation team, which included distinguished leaders in Adventist education, meticulously examined the feasibility and alignment of the proposed college with the denomination’s mission and academic standards. Joining Dr. Kibuuka were Dr. Bienvenido Mergal, Education Director of the Southern Asia-Pacific Division (SSD); Angelina Pagarigan, Associate Treasurer of SSD; Architect Dominic Pagarigan (SSD); Dr. Jane Zabat, Education Director of the North Luzon Philippine Union Mission (NLPUM); and Agnes Ravalo, Education Director of the South Luzon Philippine Union Mission (SLPUM).
“This assessment is a vital step in ensuring that the proposed institution will not only meet academic and institutional standards but will also serve as a beacon of holistic, faith-based education,” said Dr. Kibuuka during the evaluation process. “Adventist education is a transformative ministry, shaping young minds with the values of excellence, service, and spiritual growth.”
The evaluation process involved an extensive review of the proposed location, academic programs, infrastructure plans, and financial sustainability. The team assessed whether the institution could provide an environment conducive to Adventist education, emphasizing moral and spiritual development alongside intellectual growth. Architect Dominic Pagarigan provided insights into the infrastructure’s capacity to support students, faculty, and administrative functions effectively.
If approved, Adventist College Palawan will become an essential addition to the Seventh-day Adventist educational system in the Philippines, offering programs designed to equip students with academic excellence while instilling a commitment to faith and service. The initiative aligns with the Church’s long-standing dedication to education as a means of preparing individuals for a life of mission and community leadership.
Dr. Bienvenido Mergal expressed optimism regarding the institution’s potential, stating, “This college will be a landmark of Adventist education in Palawan, providing young people with access to quality, faith-based learning that will empower them to become leaders in their communities and beyond.”
The Adventist education system, one of the largest Christian educational networks in the world, operates thousands of schools, colleges, and universities worldwide, emphasizing a wholistic approach to education.
The proposed college in Palawan aims to uphold this legacy, ensuring that students receive an education that nurtures their faith, character, and professional development.
Following the evaluation, the IBE will compile its findings and recommendations for the approval process. If the application is granted, further steps will be taken to finalize the institution’s establishment, including curriculum development, faculty recruitment, and infrastructure planning.
