Could Asia Host a Future GC Session?

Could Asia Host a Future GC Session?

Heshbon Buscato

By faith, Noah built an ark before the first drop of rain. By faith, Abraham left home without knowing where he was going. And maybe—just maybe—by faith, we in Asia can dream of the day when the General Conference Session plants its global flag not in St. Louis or Indianapolis, but in one of our vibrant, worship-thirsty, tropical cities.

Too big a dream? Maybe. Too bold a prayer? Never.

The Rising Heartbeat of Adventism in Asia

The Seventh-day Adventist Church is growing in the Southern Asia-Pacific like a mango tree in summer. The fruit is ripening. The soil is ready. The prayers are rising.

So why not consider:

Manila, Philippines

A nation of warmth—both spiritual and literal. With massive arenas, international convention centers, and a heart for hosting, Filipinos won’t just organize the GC Session… they’ll serenade it.

Imagine:

  • Jeepney convoys with GC banners

  • Banig prayer stations

  • Grand chorales of “Side by Side We Stand” in eight regional dialects

Bangkok, Thailand

A city where tradition meets trend. With state-of-the-art infrastructure, Bangkok has hosted everything from ASEAN summits to global sports events—and could easily welcome our worldwide church family.

Picture this:

  • Worship under golden temple silhouettes

  • Vegetarian buffets with Pad Thai and mango sticky rice

  • Sabbath walks by the Chao Phraya River, hearts full of joy and jasmine

Jakarta, Indonesia

A city pulsing with potential. Indonesia holds one of the largest Muslim populations in the world—but amidst that, the Adventist Church is alive and growing. What a testimony it would be to gather in Jakarta and proclaim Christ with courage!

What to expect:

  • Thousands singing “Blessed Assurance” with gamelan harmonies

  • Cross-cultural fellowship like Pentecost in modern times

  • A living witness to peace and unity in diversity

Singapore, Singapore

Small but mighty, Singapore offers world-class venues, efficient systems, and unmatched multicultural hospitality. A GC Session here would be like experiencing the New Earth’s logistics—on Earth.

Envision this:

  • Youth impact events across MRT lines

  • Multilingual prayer rooms in air-conditioned towers

  • Nightly devotionals overlooking Marina Bay, as lights dance in sync with hearts lifted to heaven

Devotional Reflections: When God Chooses the Unlikely

Throughout Scripture, God often does His greatest work in places no one expects:

  • A cave in Bethlehem

  • A shoreline in Galilee

  • A prison cell in Rome

Why not an island in Southeast Asia? Or a city where monks chant in the morning and Adventists lift praises by night? God doesn’t need traditional locations. He needs a people prepared to host heaven on earth.

It Starts With a Prayer… and a Plan

Yes, there are logistical hurdles—visas, capacity, funding, even time zones. But didn’t God make a way through the Red Sea? Didn’t He feed a crowd with five loaves and two fish?

So maybe the dream begins not in a boardroom, but in a Bible study group. Not in a planning committee, but in a prayer meeting. If God’s people in Asia begin to pray and prepare with purpose, heaven might just open the door.

The Call to Dream Together

Wherever the GC Session is held next—whether it’s in a mega-city or a mountain valley—let’s live in such a way that the world sees we’re already hosting Jesus in our hearts, churches, and communities. Maybe next time… in Manila. Or Bangkok. Or Jakarta. Or Singapore.

“With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

— Matthew 19:26
