Adventist Church in the Southern Asia-Pacific Region Approves Reorganization of Sabah Mission

Edward Rodriguez

At the recent Southern Asia-Pacific Division (SSD) Year-End Meeting, a significant decision was made to expand the Adventist presence in Malaysia's Sabah region through the establishment of a new mission, the Northern Sabah Mission. This reorganization, effective January 1, 2025, aims to strengthen the Church’s reach and enhance administrative efficiency in one of Malaysia's most populous states.

Sabah, home to over 3.4 million residents, hosts a vibrant Adventist community with 33,762 members across 175 churches as of mid-2023. Recognizing the growing needs of this community, SSD approved a territorial restructuring of the existing Sabah Mission, creating the Northern Sabah Mission to focus on specific districts in the northern part of the state.

Territorial Realignment

The restructured Sabah Mission will continue to serve the larger districts in the region, including Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, and Tawau, among others, as well as the Federal Territory of Labuan. The newly established Northern Sabah Mission will oversee the northern districts of Kudat, Kota Marudu, and Pitas, along with part of the Beluran District, ensuring localized governance and closer church support for these areas.

Organizational and Structural Planning

In its initial phase until 2025, the Northern Sabah Mission will operate with three executive officers, each fulfilling comprehensive departmental roles, supported by four department directors, including one lady director, to ensure diversity in leadership. Additional roles include a stewardship director, three accounting staff, three administrative assistants, and two general support staff members, comprising a driver and a general worker.

This reorganization not only reflects the Church’s ongoing commitment to efficient and localized mission work but also marks a new chapter for the Adventist community in Sabah as it prepares to serve its members and extend its outreach in Northern Sabah.
