ADRA, Church Leaders Assess Damage After 7.8-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southern Mindanao

Initial reports prompt disaster assessments while church members and communities await a comprehensive situational update.

A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Southern Mindanao on the morning of June 8, affecting several provinces, including Sarangani, South Cotabato, Davao Occidental, and General Santos City.

The strong tremor was felt across a wide area, prompting residents to evacuate buildings and move to open spaces as authorities began evaluating possible damage to infrastructure and communities. Local disaster response agencies remain on alert as aftershocks continue to be monitored.

At the time of writing, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) and local church leaders are gathering information from affected areas to determine the extent of the earthquake’s impact on Adventist members and surrounding communities. A comprehensive situational report is expected once assessments have been completed.

The Philippines experiences frequent seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of intense tectonic movement that makes the country vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic activity throughout the year.

Church leaders have called for prayers for the safety of families, emergency responders, and communities affected by the disaster. Members are encouraged to remain vigilant, follow local authorities’ safety advisories, and continue supporting response efforts as more information becomes available.
